Let's get personal - this ones for you newbie designers

I wanted to take a second to send out a message to all the new designers or students who are working away. I was recently part of a Facebook convo where a newbie designer was having a really hard time with a client. It really affected her and I really felt for her because at one point in time we have all been there!

If you are new to design, are studying or just having one of those days I wanted to share three things in my career that without them I wouldn't be where I am today.

You will never be a graphic designer

My first ever branding assignment while I was at uni was a complete and utter disaster, I had one arm, as I had broken it riding a horse (typical) and like most uni students was a bit stressed. I asked for some help from someone who told me that I would never be a graphic designer. To say the least I was pretty hurt and ended up in a stairwell, crying and almost giving into that one comment and quitting. It only took one person to bring me back and I will always remember her for that. If someone tells you that you can't do it, or you will never do it, prove them wrong. My dad has this saying that it takes 10,000 hours to get really good at something. I think if by 10,000 hours you still aren't good enough, keep going because after that you will be. Don't EVER give up because someone says you can't do it!

Your design is ugly

My first ever design job was awesome, I was really lucky, I loved the environment, the people and most of the time the work. I did, however, have to deal with one client who had a bit of a weird communication style and was told all sorts of things like "your design is ugly"  "this is all wrong, someone else needs to do it" etc After a while it got me down and I ended up crying in the car, again, thinking what the hell am I doing? Fast forward two years and I grew a thick skin and when comments came through I found them funny. I knew it wasn't me, I knew I was doing a good job, I was more confident and again I didn't let someone tell me I couldn't.

You can do it

I'm super lucky to have two strong men in my life, my dad and my fiance. When I think I can't do something, they always remind me that I can. You only need a few people around you to keep pushing you forward and being there for you to keep you going. If you don't have that person right now, I'm saying it for you. "YOU CAN DO IT!"

Other designers are awesome

We have all been there and there are some great communities online where you can get support, ask questions, level up your skills and do a course.

Here are some links that you may find useful.
