How to write SEO page descriptions for your Squarespace Website

Your business may be the answer to someone's problem. But how will they find it in the vast amount of business online?

Make your business visible to searchers by writing SEO page descriptions! Ensure that the descriptions you create are relevant to the products and services you provide. With these descriptions, you can optimise your website for the search engines and visitors.

What are the Squarespace SEO Page descriptions?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) page description are short texts that represent your page or site content. You can see it below the page title in the search results like this one:

If you have the solution to a searcher’s problem and they don’t know where to find you, the SEO page description will help them find your website.

Think of the description as an elevator pitch since you only have to use a few words to describe what you have, what you do, or simply to provide value in a short time. Try to keep in mind what type of questions the users have to enter in the search box in order to find your business.

Here are the areas you need SEO descriptions for your Squarespace website:

  1. SEO site-wide description - This represents your homepage and is a general description of your site.

  2. SEO page descriptions - These are keyword descriptions for each individual page or collection items on your website. For example, you would need descriptions for your About, Testimonials, FAQ and Contact pages. If you have index pages you can put the description there and then turn off SEO settings for any pages within the index.

  3. Page Description - This is a general description that tells Google about what the page is.

How does SEO page description work?

The search engines determine what appears in the search results. Writing the SEO page descriptions can influence how your website appears in search engines. Ensure that your descriptions are relevant to your site’s content and the possible query that your website can answer.

Some descriptions may be overruled especially if the search engine thinks that your descriptions don’t answer the visitor's query. If that happens, the system may identify a snippet that matches the searcher's query better.

If you notice that the wrong information is displayed in search results, you can request a re-index using Google Search Console.

Tips for writing your SEO page description

It is important to create a concise yet informative SEO page description for the searcher’s benefit. Aside from that, a good SEO description can also affect your page's CTR (click-through rate) on Google and impact your page's ability to rank. The rank is helpful to make your business more visible to the searchers.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Write for people and not for the search engine by making your language conversational and natural.

The main purpose is to help the searcher find the solution to their problem. Make your description sounds like you’re talking to a real person while providing value and benefit to the user who may need your product and services.

2. Write relevant, compelling, and specific descriptions.

To create an effective SEO page description, you need to make your words action-oriented. There are lots of competitions online so writing specific and relevant descriptions helps you get the searcher’s attention in such a short time.

3. Optimise your descriptions by adding keywords but avoid keyword stuffing.

Keywords are a great way to appear on relevant searches but you have to be careful with keyword stuffing. For example, if you have a local business, add the location of the city where your business is based.

4. Write between 50-160 characters.

The text should be short and readable so your audience can read what they need to know at a glance. The search engine cuts your description up to the 160-character limit.

5. Do not duplicate your descriptions.

Make each description unique like your title tag because the search engines may penalise you for duplicating them. Create a specific SEO description for your pages and individual collection items so each item will be featured.

Examples of SEO Page descriptions

Take a look at these examples I’ve found so you can find inspiration for your own SEO Page descriptions. These descriptions contain the gist of the things you’ll find on each site in such a short text and are within 50-160 characters.

Make your business appear in search results!

Using SEO page descriptions helps every business, no matter how big or small, become visible on the internet. Make sure to write your descriptions between 50-160 characters that include keywords so the searchers will know that your site is relevant to their query.

Utilise this for every page so your website can increase its click-through rate and ranking. This way, your website will have more visitors and your business will reach people who will benefit from your products and services.
