How to Create a Password Page in Squarespace
We want our website to be inviting to the public. But sometimes we just want to make things more private when rebranding, editing and fixing a page, or simply keeping your content to a select group of people like co-workers, clients, or our most loyal subscribers.
Hiding, limiting, and restricting access to a page or an entire website is easier now with password-protected pages! A password-protected page is a page where you can control the viewers of a specific page.
In your Squarespace site, you can use this to protect a few pages you have from the general public and limit its accessibility to a select group of people. Everyone will be required to provide the password you set before they are given access to the page.
Why do you need a password page?
There are several reasons why password-protected pages are necessary. Here are some points where password pages are useful:
Restrict visitors in an under construction website
Organise your pages and plan your content
Protect a newly created page that is not ready to be launched yet
Limit the access to an existing page
Sharing free resource download pages to subscribers
Restrict exclusive pages only to certain members
For special sign up forms like intake forms, or application forms
To ensure that client projects are only accessed by a few people (i.e., project details, post-project tutorials and files)
Take note of these things before you create a password page:
It’s easy to just jump in and create a password-protected page but here are some useful reminders so you won’t get lost along the way:
Passwords must be case sensitive.
The password in the type box may appear longer than your actual password and will be replaced by a series of asterisks.
Users must re-enter the password again when their session expires after four hours.
You can put a password to protect a page and you can also set a site-wide password.
You can password-protect an existing page but it is recommended to set a password before adding any content.
Create a password-protected page
Client projects, sensitive information, or any exclusive content that you'd like to keep private can be protected through a password-protected page. Here are the steps you can use to restrict access:
Step 1: Click Page in the Home Menu.
Step 2: Select the page you want to protect with a password.
Step 3: Open the Page Settings by clicking the gear icon on the right of the page title.
Step 4: Scroll down to the password option and enter a password in the box.
Step 5: Click Save. A lock icon will then be displayed next to the page title in the page’s panel.
Step 6: Test out your page by clicking the incognito tab. Go to the password-protected page and log in using your password.
Step 7: A default lock screen will be shown when visiting the page's URL.
Customize the lock screen by using the Lock Screen tweak in the Design panel.
In the future, you can also change or remove the password. Just follow steps 1 - 4, then either add a new password or delete the existing one and click Save.
Want to protect your entire website?
Hide your whole site using a site-wide password! This step is really helpful especially for websites under construction. Follow these steps to create a site-wide password:
Step 1: Click Settings in the Home Menu, then click the Site Visibility.
Step 2: Click the drop-down menu and select Password Protected.
Step 3: Enter the password that will be used to view your website.
Step 4: Click Save.
Take note that you can't create a different set of passwords for different people to access your website. The site-wide password uses a single password to access your site's content.
Protect your pages!
You never have to worry now that your Squarespace website is wide open. Simply create a password-protected page or secure your entire website. You can even customise the lock screen page depending on what you like. Use the password-protect feature to build a new project, edit your entire website, or share exclusive content to a group of people!
